DHA LXX
(7/1/2004)
A near capacity audience was reported at the musical evening fund-raiser for the DHA at the Baptist Church SUnday evening, June 20th, Father's Day. Reports heard were all "rave reviews" with many sayig that they had not realized that the program had lasted much longer than anticipated.
The free will offerings for teh music and for the lunch were most excellent, pleasing all concerned. The lunch was furnished by DHA members.
The museum building was open during and after the program. Though, as anticipated, no one stopped during the program, it is felt important to have the museum building open for public use whenever possible as work continues on the building and with Danish Days preparations. A number from the audience did tour the building after having lunch. Many commented with interest and approval.
Minga Tak
A big DHA Minga Tak goes to the Baptist Church, the planners, the musicians, the Boy Scouts, the church ladies, and all the others that made the event such a pleasure and success. And Minga Tak especially for all the contributions.
And special Minga Tak to David Mork for donating opening of the museum's basement floor drain.
The Board of the Daneville Heritage Association met at 6:30 p.m. June 23 at the museum building. Board present: Melanie Parsons, Toots Peterson, Lester Lauritzen, and Grant Petersen, Sr. Also present Palmer and Marjorie Peterson.
Much discussion preparatory to Danish Days July 16-18. It was decided to install two new windows in the east end of the building. Painting of the north side may be done soon.
Palmer reported progress in preparing the building. The basement floor drain had been cleared courtesy of David Mork, and air conditioner has been charged and works.
Two fund-raising projects are under active consideration: 1) T-shirts--white with an oval on the back, lettered in the top "Daneville Heritage Association" and in the bottom "Viborg, SD," and 2) a couple sets of four photo postcards.
DHA meetings will continue Wednesday evening through Danish Days.
The conductor of DHA News volunteered to be host in the DHA museum on the Fourht-of-July. Intended schedule will be 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 or 4:30 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.
Your DHA newsboy was invited to visit the June 18th reunion of the descendants of Niels and Ludevikke (Buck) Jespersen at the DBS Hall Friday, June 18th. The Niels Jespersen farm was located 3/4 mile south of the center of Viborg, and the site of the Daneville that became Viborg when the railroad came through at the intersection to the north ing 1993.
Having at one time known to some extent the Jespersens' children, Ronald, Neelna, Harold, Dagmar, Raymond and Edith, and a cousin Peter Buck, he enjoyed an hour or two visiting with those of that generation past.
He answered questions and gave information about DHA and the museum. He received some possiblities of artifacts and information that mayb e furnished for the museum, and of future support for the museum.
He also visited the afternoon of June 10th at the 80th birthday-anniversary of a cousin, Geraldine (Gerry) Christensen of Viborg, and her children at the DBS Hall.
The time is approaching when DHA will have need for people that can and wish to contribute by doing repairs and restoration on artifacts of all types. Some place will be available for such work, room in the museum building. Additional, larger sites for both restoration and artifact display will then be needed. A set of usable farm buildings at or near Viborg would be very helpful. Gifts, bequests, or rent-free long-time loan of such property will be of great value to DHA's goal of historic preservation.
Farm machinery and equipment restoration will include: replacing or repairing rotted wood parts; removal of rust, un-"freezing" of moving parts that have rusted solid; determining proper original colors and repainting, etc. People who use computers may be able to find paint colors, manufacturer's logos, and sources of needed repairs. Also of value would be the donation to DHA of owners and parts manuals for farm equipment, and any other artifacts that might have had such.
